Shifting circadian rhythms

It is that time of year again where in the space of a few short weeks it seems like a complete change light-wise.

Whereas a few weeks ago I was still out past 7 pm in the evening with my son riding his bike down the street, now he is remarking that it is time for bed, pointing at the darkness even before we manage to serve dinner.

These drastic and fast light changes have big effects on the circadian rhythms of all living things.

It is suddenly just that little bit harder to wake up when it is pitch black both outside and inside the room.

I am not a big fan of the brutality of an alarm clock. Especially when it feels like it is still 2 am.

Therefore a few years ago I bought myself a light alarm clock which replicates both sunrise and sunset within the bedroom.

For a 20 minute period before my designated alarm sound of birds chirping, the room gets progressively lighter and lighter.

Eventually we are rivaling the Christmas lights on any big city’s main street.

But here is the thing….. It works! I awake gently and naturally from my sleep without some mechanical beeping drill-sergeant commanding me to get up.

And so I wake up gently and with energy, instead of searching like a zombie for the coffee machine.

Anyways that is just my little tip if you are struggling with the morning darkness.
