For those who follow my blog and Instagram you will be aware of my recents posts on deforestation in Maridalen (Oslo’s El Dorado).
Last week whilst out I found a new area (one of my favourite spots) where the lumberjacks were working. Huge machines destroying the ground, literally ripping up trees and damaging the eco system.
I spoke to one of the young lumberjacks and asked how much forest they would be taking. He assured me they were thinning out the trees to allow regrowth.
I expressed my concerns at the areas nearby which had been completely cleared. He nodded and agreed with me.
Yesterday as I drove past the same spot, the trees were gone. A token one or two left behind, but vast areas cleared. My heart sank.
They are currently working on cutting down vast amounts of forest in at least 5 different locations in Maridalen.
Maridalen is a safe spot for Oslo residents to explore, enjoy and find peace from the stresses of daily life. Maridalen is Oslo residents’ Mental Health.
Maybe you think that there are plenty of trees and that clearing some of these areas is no big deal.
Madagascar was once covered in rain forest, the Amazon was once much bigger, Easter island also was covered in woodland. Humans’confidence and arrogance is why these areas were destroyed. All in the name of profit and greed.
Cleared areas hold less moisture, making them more prone to soil erosion, top soil run-off and eventually forest fires. Not to mention that Maridalen is currently the main source of drinking water for Oslo.
We don’t want to go walking in large open desolate areas of scorched earth, exposed to winds and rains. The woods are where we find zen.
It is crucial that we protect them and spread the message.
