Day and Night

In England we have a saying when things are polar opposites, “it is like day and night”.

The reason I was thinking of this today is the huge differences currently between the city and up in the woods.

Whilst the city, more or less, has smooth tarmac roads up, in the hills and in the woods Winter is very much still in full flow.

This leads to some quiet comical situations and especially with regards to the temperature differentials.

With temperatures hitting -10 early this morning I was decked out in full Explorer Gear. My thickest down jacket makes me look like I am attempting to summit a great mountain. My spiked shoes are invaluable on the sheet ice, especially with several dogs attached to my harness.

Fast forward 2 hours and I am turning heads and getting some strange looks downtown. In the sunshine it is pleasantly warm as I click with each footstep in the city centre.

I used to feel self-conscious about this type of thing and would have a spare pair of shoes in the van so as to blend in more.

With age and experience I have luckily stopped caring.

Always better to be functional than to be fashionable.

So if you fancy an adventure and it feels a bit too much like Easter downtown, I thoroughly recommend heading into the hills for some snow-based fun.
