14 years ago my commute was very different…..
Suit, shirt, tie, smart shoes I would clamber onto the 6am metro into London. Working in Canary Wharf, if I made my usual connections it was just over an hour door to desk.
Eyes down, listening to music, reading the free newspaper (smartphones hadn’t really become mainstream), I would travel in my own insular world. It was lonely, it was boring, it was grey.
The destination wasn’t appealing to me… An office filled with mostly artificial light and air…. A luxury prison of sorts for me to spend Monday to Friday in.
Fast forward to now and how life has changed. I travel more hours, but I couldn’t be happier.
I have swapped 2 commutes for 4 (pick ups and drop offs twice a day).
My commute is interspersed with meeting owners, neighbours, strangers and chatting and trying to develop relationships and spread positive energy. And I am greeted by jubilant dogs at each stop
As a reward for my commute I get to take out gorgeous dogs into Oslo’s wild nature.
There is still music, there are audiobooks and podcasts to keep me updated and learning.
If there is traffic I now know most of the backstreet shortcuts by heart. I travel down roads and remember dogs and adventures from years gone by.
The commute has become a thing of joy instead of an objective to get to destination as quickly as possible.
Happy weekend!
