The Rubbish Dump

After a long Winter of storing up cardboard boxes and newspapers it was finally time for me to go to the rubbish dump on Saturday and make enough room for me to be able to access my summer tyres.

The cardboard boxes are no longer usable in the conventional sense. Over the Winter they became cars, trains, boats and whatever my kids’ imaginations could conjure up.

They have been well loved and destroyed at the same time.

It was an opportunity to recycle them and give them a new lease of life.

The trip would also mark the first time that my son would join me at the rubbish dump. He absolutely loves diggers and tractors and anything to do with machines.

He had been super excited for over a week that we would be going there together. It was a type of theme park for him.

He absolutely loved throwing the cardboard boxes into the big containers and watching them get crushed.

As a reward for his hard work and help, we went over to the area where people can leave items which are still in working order and you can take them for free.

Imagine a little boy’s joy in finding two footballs, a basketball, a small football goal and a full aquaplay toy set.

He asked where we should go to pay for them. I used it as an opportunity to say that when we do good work and we work hard we get rewards.

We completed the recycling loop by both taking things to be recycled and thereafter giving toys a new chance.

And with the weather gods smiling down on us throughout the weekend it was the perfect opportunity to put all of these new toys into use.

I tell this story mainly to show how what could be perceived as a chore can be turned into a great adventure.

And secondly just because something is being given away for free does not mean that it has no value.
