The North-South Axis

As a kid I was always fascinated by compasses. The concept of being able to navigate by using the magnetic poles was truly awe-inspiring.

Fast forward to Saturday and I am out with a little pack of dogs who are staying with me for the weekend.

Now, I had read some study many, many years ago about the topic which I will discuss. At the time I dismissed it as purely amusing and clearly some kind of April Fools joke.

I was atop a little hill overlooking the Oslofjord, when three of the dogs decided to have a poo simultaneously. Much like a good yawn for humans, dogs seem to be motivated to defecate when they see another dog doing the same.

What struck me this time was how all three dogs were aligned on the North South axis. Having a clear view of the fjord and knowing which way we were facing, the study came back to me.

Apparently dogs will align themselves on the North South axis so as to use magnetism to help them poo.

Some will face South, and some will face North, I haven’t found out what the direction correlates to.

What I then went on to think about is that the toilets where I live are aligned on the East West axis.

Should society follow dogs’ examples and commission architects to redesign future houses to aid bowel movements?

Maybe if you are lost far into the woods with no GPS or mobile phone reception, you can observe your dog going for a poo….. After that it is 50/50 which way is South and which way is North….. Hopefully not too many clouds around and you can preferably rely on navigating using the position of the sun.
