The Stranger in the Woods

Bit of a non dog-related blog today but I think you will get the reference and hopefully enjoy the read.

After diligently working through quite a backlog of fantastic audiobooks, today I started a new compelling listen.

The book title is the same as the title of today’s blog.

I will give a super quick summary of the story and I think you will understand my interest and fascination.

In 1986, and in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, a 20 year old man from Maine in the USA parked up his car and disappeared into the woods.

He would live in the woods for the next 27 years until he was finally caught in 2013 whilst stealing food from a Summer Camp.

During all of these years he only ever met one person on his Adventures and uttered the single syllable “hi”.

Surviving from taking supplies from nearby cabins and camps, amazingly he never lit a fire in 27 years for fear of the smoke giving away his location.

Whilst I am only at the beginning of this extraordinary tale, I think we can all relate to the urge to disappear into the woods and escape modern society.

Over the course of his 27 years of solitude in nature, the myth around the so-called Hermit of North Pond developed.

I don’t think it is going to take me too long to get through this audiobook, so I will report back once finished.
