Give it away and you will receive back

Today I just wanted to share a little story, especially as I got an update back from it.

I have purposely kept the details of the story vague so as to not make the people involved identifiable, apart from myself.

I was driving downtown Oslo when suddenly I saw a young Border Collie running down the middle of a very busy Oslo road.

There was a fair amount of traffic and the dog seemed both excited and confused. It was definitely in herding mode.

Clearly as a dog (and Border Collie) owner, dog lover and self-proclaimed dog expert I had to act.

Whilst trying to run over as few humans as possible I parked my truck up on the pavement, hazard lights flashing (as if i was some kind of Emergency Service) and jumped out, with dog treats in hand.

As so often I was denied my superhero moment as a woman had got hold of the Border Collie by the time I reached it.

Not wanting to be deemed useless I approached and asked if there was anything I could help with.

It turned out that this lady was in fact the owner of the Border Collie and that it had run from her a few hundred metres away, but that in the commotion she had lost her dog lead.

The lady had taken a lanyard and looped it through the collar of the dog. The lady informed me that she would be heading to a pet shop to purchase another lead.

I knew that the nearest pet shop was 1km away and that it would be a real struggle with a young Border Collie around traffic to get there using the makeshift lanyard setup.

Without hesitation I immediately told her that she could have one of my leads and pointed at my truck. She refused, but I insisted.

She gratefully accepted and we walked over to my van where I gave her one of our sturdy red dog leads.

But here is the issue….. and why this story refers to the title of today’s dog blog.

Recently we have lost a few dog leads and had a few get destroyed through extreme adventuring. Normally I order a good batch to ensure that we always have reserves, but my supplier has been sold out for the last three months.

Giving away one of our precious few good dog leads maybe didn’t seem like the best idea but it was the right thing to do.

But here is the magical thing about the Universe and how karma works.

No less than three hours later I was dropping off a dog when one customer asked if I would like to inherit three of their old dog leads.

Sometimes just trusting in the fact that everything will work out does wonders.

And so back to today and as I am picking up my afternoon dogs, whom should I see walking down the pavement, red lead attached, almost in exactly the same spot as I first saw them….. None other than my Border Collie friend and his owner, enjoying the sunshine.
