Today as I was driving around in the truck to and from dog adventures I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts.
The podcast in question is called “how I built this” and it is a business podcast which interviews Entrepreneurs who have built game-changing companies.
As someone who has a Bachelor’s degree in Business and International Management this topic fascinates me.
I am a firm believer that business practices are highly transferable across different industries. Therefore listening to ideas and different ways in which leaders have built their businesses hopefully inspires me and helps me refine and improve our service to you.
Today’s Podcast episode was even more pertinent as it was with the founder of Bark. Bark, it turns out, is a subscription service for dog owners to access toys for their dogs.
Don’t worry I am not about to sell you dog toys.
The nugget of gold which I took from the interview was when the founder spoke about specialisation. Bark was the industry leader in dog toys but looked to expand into dog food, as the industry sales were ten times larger.
After a few years and varying success they decided to stop trying to compete in that industry as it was detracting from their focus and their core service.
I found this extra amusing as I have previously been asked by people if I would consider selling dog food or dog toys, dog training and dog equipment as an extra revenue source.
I am always willing and available to talk to anyone about dog food and dog equipment whilst sharing tips and recommendations of what has worked for us.
However Dog care, whether it be walks or dogs sitting, is what we specialize in and what we hope you will agree we are excellent at.
The bottom line is not about revenue but about where to focus our energy so as to excel at what we want to deliver.
So sit back, scroll down and enjoy the happy dogs adventuring
