Using obstacles as a source of exploration

Routine is the killer of creativity

Do not get me wrong anyone who has small children will know how routine can be a source of comfort and safety to them. It is also a great excuse to say “now it is bedtime, we are going upstairs”.

Obstacles pop up regularly in our day to day lives. How we approach them and our attitude will determine a lot.

Recently there have been a multitude of roadworks in and around Oslo. It is the end of the financial year and budgets need to be spent, so as to justify higher taxes and similar budgets for 2025.

One of my favourite areas to explore is currently a little more tricky, and time consuming, to get to despite its proximity to the city.

Now I could let this annoy me and spend the extra time in the van to continue exploring my regular spot. Or I can make the conscious decision that this is the perfect excuse to head to more accessible nearby areas which I do not know as well.

Variety is the Spice of Life

And so my gangs and I have been in search of new parking spots. By parking spots I mean putting my truck into four-wheel drive and stopping on the side embankment of woodland where I might not have fully explored in the last few years.

With the passing of time, woods and trails have changed and the views are almost unrecognizable from previous Adventures. I am as such experiencing the same places anew.

The breaking of routine must be celebrated. It allows us to step outside the comfort zone and further push our own limits.

But this does not have to be done on a large scale. Tonight on your evening walk why not change up your regular walk and walk down a different street or trail, in a conscious manner. Take in the different views, noises and people you might meet.
