The Changing Room

It is a non-descript afternoon in the early 1990s. I am wearing boots, knee-high socks, a thick reversible sports top and some shorts which would look too short on today’s cheerleaders.

It is either a Tuesday or Thursday and we are doing Sports afternoon at school just outside London.

Most likely we are about to play rugby, a sport where you spend a good portion of your time either on the ground or being attacked by the opposition (or both).

From the warmth of the changing room we can see out of the door and the rain, which is hammering it down outside. Those playing fields will be muddy wet and cold.

Our Sports Teachers have no intention of letting us stay inside. And this is exactly why over 30 years later I am super grateful for all of these experiences.

I lost count a long, long time ago of the amount of days where the weather looks unappealing and yet you just get out into nature and have fantastic Adventures.

These days I have swapped my school sports kit for amazing waterproofs and technical clothing. I need not fear the conditions.

Yet the van is warm and it brings back those changing room feelings.

Experience has taught me over and over again that you just need to get out there and get moving. Fun will always follow.
