The Legend of Twist

Late last night I received the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of my dearest friends, Twist.

It was not unexpected, and in a way it is nice to know that she is finally resting peacefully. She had lived an amazing and long life surrounded with love and adventure.

For those of you who have followed the dog blog over many, many years you will no doubt remember Twist.

She started on our dog Adventures over a decade ago. She was one of the members of our 1000+ Adventure Club.

Earlier this year I wrote a tribute to her when we decided to retire her from our walks and let her live out her remaining days relaxing.

However 2 weeks ago her owners both suddenly needed to go away one weekend. They knew that Twist was near the end and it pained them greatly to have to travel from her for a few days. Aside from her owners there were few people who she knew as well as me.

Over the years I have been extremely fortunate to have Twist staying with my family and I on numerous occasions.

Therefore it was an immense pleasure for her to come for one last visit and spend some time with us. An opportunity to say goodbye over the course of a long weekend instead of a fleeting visit.

Despite being nearly blind and extremely deaf, I witnessed her unbridled joy when she smelt my children coming into the room to greet her. It was clearly an emotional moment for everyone present.

By this point she was too weak to join on walks of any distance. She was unable to manage stairs and therefore in the driving rain I carried her up to the woods under an umbrella as we spend 20 minutes together enjoying Nature.

I have never seen a person or dog who did not love Twist. She was a gentle and beautiful soul with a fantastic character.

My most heartfelt condolences go out to her wonderful owners, Rikki and Otto, and to her extended family whom I have been privileged to meet over the years.

Finally a big thank you to the fantastic Twist for so many adventures, memories and smiles.

Rest in Peace Twisty ❤️🐾
