Hello Aurora

Last night I was sat at home. I was a little bit tired after two fantastic Dog Adventures and getting ready to head out on my nightwalk with Minttu.

I could see that the temperature was dropping rapidly. Time to put on my big woollen dog jumper, which I know so many of you love.

Just at that moment my phone vibrated and I got yet another notification from an app.

This time it was telling me that if the sky was clear outside I would have a good chance of seeing Northern Lights within the next 30 minutes.

I get these notifications quite often and decided I would head out, but not set any big expectations.

To put this in context over the last 7 years I have walked countless times in the freezing cold to Svartkulp (near Sognsvann) and waited for them to appear.

Hour after hour over the years I have stood there, mildly disappointed that my timing has not been on point.

On my way to the lake I took one or two photos of the clear night sky as my camera is fantastic at enhancing any green hue.

I could see a vague Green backlight in the night sky and sent my good friend, and former Dog Walker, Morten a message to tell him where I was going if he fancied joining. He only lives one road away from me.

His reply did not take long and he said he would be heading out in 10 minutes to come find us.

As I was approaching Svartkulp, I saw the dancing lights far off on the horizon to the North.

Finally after all these years I got to experience it, in the place where I have so patiently waited for it to appear.

After a few photos I put my phone away and just enjoyed the moment without technology. I actually wanted to upload the photo super quickly in case it gave any of you the opportunity to look out the window or towards the North and also catch the spectacular dance.

Morten arrived 15 minutes later and by then it had finished.

He wasn’t too disappointed and we used the opportunity to wait there for another 15 minutes whilst we chatted and caught up before we walked the 20 minutes home.

It is hard to know exactly where and when Nature will give up these amazing free moments. You can climb a mountain for 7 hours only for the view from the top to be shrouded in thick cloud. With a combination of patience, timing and a little bit of good luck you get rewarded with unbelievable riches.
