Another day, another story.
This morning, post kindergarten drop off but pre-first dog adventure, I was offered the fantastic opportunity to try and be a Hero.
Very few things in life give me as much satisfaction as these little opportunities.
Returning from dropping off the kids at kindergarten I noticed a young couple across the road searching in the snow.
I went inside and got Minttu, so that I could put her in the van and start the engine to warm it up.
Returning to the van a few moments later I saw that the young couple had still not found whatever they had lost. I checked my watch and saw that I had about 10 minutes free.
I sauntered over and asked them what they were looking for. I had taken a head torch in case it could help. The man explained that he had tried to throw the car key to his partner from the second floor balcony and it had landed somewhere in the snow.
The search area covered around 15m sq of fresh 15 cm deep snow. Some of it had been trampled down whilst they were looking for the key.
I analyzed where the balcony was, where he said his partner had been standing, and the fact he maintained that he wasn’t that bad at throwing.
I started to look for impact marks in the snow and searched a few of the holes. No luck.
I was running out of time and missing out of my chance to be a Hero.
I decided that, with only a few minutes left, now was not the time for strategic analysis but brute digging force.
I donned a pair of thick ski mittens and got to work, churning up as much snow as possible. The couple were still ambling around, having already spent 20 minutes fruitlessly looking for their key.
Within 30 seconds of frantic digging I hit the jackpot, gave them the car key, bid them a good day and jogged off and jumped in the van.
All in a day’s work for Captain Dog Adventure. Hero status restored!
Goes to show that sometimes you need to take a step back and think logically….. and yet at other times you just need to crack on with the job as quickly as possible.
