Yes, you read that blog title correctly.
No, I have not been smoking dubious substances.
You can essentially predict where you might meet Moose by considering the logic of where an ancient fortification might have been positioned.
Hear me out, instead of dismissing this link.
Both moose and fortress like to sit atop a mound or hillock. There are numerous advantages with this positioning.
The most obvious one is visibility. From their elevated position they are able to spot threats much sooner. It is also easier to defend a hill from the top if under attack. Claim the high ground.
And Climate also plays an important role. In Summer the elevated position allows for more breeze and wind, which keeps the insects away and helps them keep cool with some good thermoregulation.
In Winter the knolls may be wind blown and sun affected leading to thinner snow levels. This in turn may lead to drier conditions due to drainage from the land.
All of these factors may well help you to identify, within your given landscape, where you might find moose and / or a former fortress or dwelling. (Think buried Viking treasure!)
Moose are generally solitary animals, and yet will gather in larger groups upon these hillocks as an added form of safety.
In summary and to quote the great Monty Python Boys……. “And now for something completely different”…..
