Bit of an amusing blog post today which refers to one of my favourite games to play whilst out alone with Minttu or my kids on a walk in the woods.
If you don’t know what the “floor is lava” is, then I will explain. The simple premise is that you are not allowed to touch the ground…. You can select what you are allowed to step on, but the ground / floor (at home) is game over.
My personal favourite is to have to navigate small paths through the woods only able to step on roots and stones….. This is easier said than done, and it keeps you focused on your choice of path, your balance and where your next step(s) might be.
Minttu watches as i wobble, hop and clamber down the path as she ignores all the rules and enjoys bouncing everywhere. Occasionally I get her to bring me a large stick to drop in my path to help me continue.
This weekend I was extremely fortunate to be able to teach my son this very game on some rocky areas near Sognsvann. Of course we had to feed the ducks first.

Passing on climbing tips, whether up or down, to the next generation is fantastic…. But it is teaching young kids to play with, and in, nature whilst respecting the limits and risks which is the most rewarding.
No matter your age, the Floor is Lava will have you focused and laughing throughout sections of your dogwalks!
