The Tree and the Rock

This morning whilst I was out exploring in the most magnificent scenery I came across a fabulous sight.

Nature always impresses me in both it’s complexity and simplicity.

As we were approaching the end of our adventure I was walking through a Valley with huge rockfaces and boulders on both sides.

I have walked this path before and yet clearly not been present to the beautiful thing that I saw today.

As I approached one tree, which had grown up in the shade under a huge  boulder, I noticed something quite unique.

The tree had grown straight up until it reached the overhang of this boulder. Most trees wood have continued the growth at an angle around the rock face.

But not this particular tree. The tree had grown up past the boulder, and actually attached itself midway like an anchor point to the rock, before continuing upwards on its journey of life.

My video might clarify what words cannot truly express.

In attaching itself to this huge boulder, the tree has become stronger.

This made me think about what nature could teach us.

We all see ourselves as individual trees in a forest, competing for sunlight and resources.

And yet it is the tree that has leaned on a little extra support which is the most stable.

The Beatles once sang “i get by with a little help from my friends”.

Let us learn from an old, wise and stable tree.
