Funny little story from earlier today.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, life surprises you.
I was just finishing my first Dog Adventure and had climbed back into the van.
I was trying to get rid of the fog on the inside of the windscreen, due to quite how wet we were.
With the air system on the full blow, I peered through the windscreen which was clearing up.
It was then that I saw the dog running up the road without a leash. About 15 metres behind it was a van driving slowly.
I did not recognize the van as a fellow Dog Walker, knowing pretty much everyone in the Oslo industry after so many years.
I thought that maybe it was a kind-hearted stranger who was trying to get the dog, a border collie cross breed, back after it had run away and was loose on the road in Maridalen.
Being the self-proclaimed Dog Father and a wannabe Hero, I set off in pursuit of both dog and van.
We were geographically not too far from the railway tracks, and I was afraid the dog might get scared and run towards the rail crossing and into the deeper woods.
With the rain still hammering down, I put down my driver’s side window and reached for my dog whistle.
It is a shame that no one was around, as two vans following a dog running up a road with one man leaning out of the window and blowing on a dog whistle would have been quite a sight to behold.
Eventually after another 100 metres, the van in front of me indicated as if he was going to stop or pull over.
As he pulled up on the side of the road the dog circled his van and sat down next to the driver’s door.
I slowly and carefully came alongside.
I put down my passenger window and asked the man if it was his dog.
The elderly gentleman gave me a thumbs up and waved me on.
Now I fully appreciate that it was raining heavily, but this is definitely a new way to walk a dog which I have not previously experienced.
Despite my shock and surprise, the dog did not seem fazed by this approach and neither did the elderly gentleman, who looked considerably drier and warmer than I was after a good Dog Adventure in the rain.
