I’ve previously touched on this subject in earlier dog blogs, so apologies if it sounds like I am slightly repeating myself.
However it is a heart warming subject and something which I love to share. For a Dog Walker there is little more rewarding than watching the progress, walk by walk, of a new dog integrating successfully into the dog pack.
Every dog will react differently to their first few walks. Song throw themselves chaotically into the energy and playfulness, whereas others will stand on the sidelines and use a little more time to feel comfortable.
Just like with children, there is no correct formula and you have to cater to each individual dog’s characters and needs.
Today marked the third walk for one of our new dogs, who shall remain nameless.
The beginning of the first walk was a little overwhelming for her. For this reason the first three times she was in the van I let her ride up front with me, so as that we could get better acquainted.
However already by the end of her second walk she was jumping up willingly and enthusiastically into the van with her new pack members.
She is clearly comfortable with me, but the priority is to get her as comfortable around other dogs as possible. By her jumping unaided in the back of the van she gets extra socializing time and exposure to other dogs during pickup and drop off.
And this in turn has led to a much quicker integration and a calmer, happier dog on the adventures.
Like any good parent or guardian I am extremely proud of the progress that she has made thus far, and I am in no doubt that she will continue to do so in the coming weeks.
