It is always difficult to trust reviews when considering different options…. You never know which ones have been paid for, or what their incentive in reviewing the item or vehicle might have been.
Search for anything online and YouTube will be full of videos and there will be lots of articles reviewing anything and everything.
For years I’ve been following the evolution, and then options, with regards to electric pickup trucks.
The last few years have seen the market develop several further options as more car makers add one to their range of vehicles.
But what the stats say and true reality differ quite a lot.
Therefore late morning when I saw an electric pickup parked up down near one of my dog pickups I jumped out to have a quick chat with the owner.
He turned out to be a tree surgeon, which was perfect for my line of questioning. Here would be someone who is both in the city and also up in the woods.
He was more than happy to tell me about his experience with his truck. After a few minutes he stopped selling it and told me the things that he missed or which could be better. I always find this is where the truth comes out.
It turns out that the truck is quite low to the ground and therefore does not have so much clearance in Winter conditions up in the woods. Whilst the four-wheel drive system is good, it is not great.
As he looked over at my old truck he told me that he still missed his old diesel pickup truck. He told me that he never used to get stuck when driving that one.
Chat and interrogation over, I had heard enough. Whilst an electric van would absolutely turn my toll and parking budget to zero, the brutal reality is that the technology is not quite there yet for a rugged enough electric pickup truck to handle the extreme Winter conditions and plough through the snow like I do in Oslomarka. I don’t want to compromise on adventure for the sake of comfort.
The time will eventually come where the technology catches up. For the meantime my trusty old workhorse is absolutely the best option.
Of course I knew this all along….. But it’s nice to talk.
